| For a great hiking trip in Alaska that allows you to experience the solitude of Wrangell St. Elias National Park while lazing about a glacier mountain lake, our Nizina Basecamp is an excellent choice For those with limited time, this is a great hiking trip. In Alaska, glaciers carve wide valleys along their body and deep lakes at their tongue. Setting up camp along the lake gives us an opportunity to explore the basin, surrounding valley and river bar, as well as heading up the nearby ridgelines for broader views and beautiful sunrises. Come join us for a quick hiking trip in Alaska’s amazing Wrangell St. Elias! |
|

As our bush plane approaches Nizina Lake, we get a sweeping
aerial view of the terrain we’ll be exploring over the next few days. The majesty of the Wrangell St. Elias National Park is truly awe inspiring.
|

Wrangell St. Elias hiking trips often require a bush plane flight to get
into the backcountry. Have your camera ready, as these flights are
always a highlight of any deep backcountry hiking trip in Alaska.
|

Exploring around the lake is fantastic – with an abundance of wildflowers and amazing geology which is very prominent in this glacially-scoured basin.
|

Icebergs bob in the calm waters that pool at the tongue of the
glacier. Towards evening, we may hear the occasional
booming of ice chunks releasing from the glacier.
|

We always hope to catch a glimpse of wildlife on every hiking trip.
In Alaska, black bear and grizzly are both common, although shy.
|

Your guide will tell you how to identify different bear tracks,
and tell you some of the behaviors that we have witnessed
here in the Wrangell St. Elias.
|

Bears often walk beside water courses, and although we don’t always
see bears, we almost always run into their trails and tracks.
|

We’ll skirt the mountain ridgelines along the valley in search
of
pretty lakes and streams fed by snowmelt from above.
|

One full day adventure is to head along the side of the ice,
walking alongside its icy walls as it slides silently down valley.
Eventually we will gain access and hike on a glacier!
|

The surface of the glacier is sprinkled with silt, but cracks in
the ice, or crevasses, reveal the pure blue-white glacial ice
that forms this awesome natural feature.
|

Views up glacier reveal the peaks of the Wrangell St. Elias
that span from Regal Mountain to Frederika Mountain.
|

Runoff from the ridgelines above carve steep slots,
creating beautiful waterfalls and pleasant lunch spots.
