| If you are interested in wonderful, long day hikes from a basecamp - experiencing a wide variety of terrain in the Wrangell-St. Elias, then this classic Alaska hiking trip could be perfect for you. Setting up camp just a few miles from the airstrip allows us to shed our bigger backpacks, and the low lying vegetation of the high alpine tundra allows us to cover more ground, getting a taste of many different terrains in the amazing Wrangell St. Elias. |

The broad valley of Skolai is a convergence of the Wrangell and St. Elias
mountain ranges, which leads to the incredibly diverse
landscapes that
make a perfect playground for an Alaska hiking trip adventure.

This area has been recently scoured by glacial activity, and the imposing
Russell Glacier stands as a not-so-subtle reminder of ages past. Although
not uncommon in Alaska, hiking trips in Wrangell St. Elias give access to
some of the most glaciated terrain in the state. Photo by Ray Bulson.

Caribou roam the basin at Skolai, and it is one of the few places
in Wrangell St Elias where you are likely to catch a glimpse of
these majestic animals.
|

On the bush flight into the backcountry, we’ll fly over spruce forests,
wide river bars and the towering Mile High Cliffs of the Nizina River.

Join the finest backpacking guides in the state for the fun
camaraderie that comes with shared laughs and shared adventure!

The rugged Seven Sisters – a series of hanging glaciers cascading
down into a bowl near Skolai. Alaska backpacking at its best!

Lose yourself in the magnificent landscapes of Wrangell St. Elias.

Wild blueberries make great snacks and even better pancakes!

Exploding with color, wildflowers cover some slopes and dot the
tundra throughout the area. Some even make a tasty salad topping.

Fall colors come into the tundra in August, which makes a beautiful patchwork quilt of sublime beauty upon which to explore the rock
strewn Chitistone Pass.

Expansive views up the Russell make this trek a highlight of the Skolai Pass Hiking Trip. Occassionally, we are lucky enough to
see the shy but immense Mt. Bona, at 16,421 it is the tallest volcano of the Wrangell St. Elias (and tallest in the United States).
